Meteorological devices containing thousands of packs of cigarettes have caused flight disruptions in Lithuania, as the country's main airport was required to halt operations for an extended period when dozens of them drifted across the airspace of Lithuania.
Aviation Problems
The temporary shutdown led to thirty canceled flights impacting thousands of passengers, with authorities cautioning that additional delays could occur throughout Monday.
Border Security Response
Border security stated that twenty-five weather balloons were observed crossing into Lithuania from the adjacent country of Belarus, with two of which ending up right above the aviation facility.
Up to 14 of the atmospheric instruments deployed throughout the weekend passed through the capital region, which is home to Lithuania's primary metropolis and near the Belarusian boundary.
Illegal Goods Seizure
At least 11 balloons transporting eighteen thousand packages of contraband smoking materials have since been recovered, though this number could rise, according to customs agents.
Regional Smuggling Pattern
Despite the disruption, authorities noted that "Weather devices carrying illegal goods - Belarusian smoking products - are common occurrences in Lithuania, Latvia, and Poland."
So far this year, over five hundred weather devices have been recorded entering Lithuania from Belarus, while approximately 966 had been recorded last year.
Regional Consequences
Simultaneously, the north-eastern Polish territory, which similarly neighbors Belarus, has registered in excess of numerous instances in which contraband was flown from its neighbor using the meteorological equipment.
Smuggling Techniques
In response to questions about why criminal organizations employ a technique that proves especially affected by weather factors rather than more controllable drones, representatives elaborated that "Atmospheric equipment are rudimentary tools used by illegal traders - they are cheaper than drones for carrying smoking materials from Belarus."
Law Enforcement Objectives
Officials added that "The goal of law enforcement is to seize the largest possible quantities of contraband and to arrest masterminds and perpetrators so that such operations become economically unsustainable and do not pose risk to passenger aircraft."
International Concerns
These airspace violations occur during a time of increased concerns in Europe following multiple unmanned aircraft violations that have resulted in flight interruptions across the continent.
Similar occurrences in adjacent nations have prompted European leaders to fast-track conversations about improving airspace protection throughout European airspace.
